37 Caldwell prisoners test peremptory for drugs

Louisiana Department of Corrections secluded 40 inmates from Caldwell Correctional Center after 37 prisoners tested actual for drugs.
Caldwell Parish Sheriff Steve May related a routine drug screening of D dorm on Thursday showed 20 prisoners testing positive for marijuana. May then called the Department of Corrections, which sent a party to the correctional center on Saturday to test all prisoners.
The department’s screening yielded 17 additional inmates with marijuana in their system and three inmates with cell phones.
May said the 40 inmates would be moved to Fort Wade and would lose their “good time” — 180 days along for good demeanor. An investigation Thursday revealed the drugs had come into the prison during visiting hours.
“We believe a wife smuggled it in during visiting hours last week,” May aforesaid. “During our visiting hours, prisoners are allowed to sit across the slab from visitors. There are no longer any contact visits.”
May estimated the total number of inmates in the center around 400.
